ASF Garage application refused

The Council has sent a resounding 'no' to developers who want to redevelop the ASF Garage site.  The full decision letter is attached below along with the Officers' Report.

The linear open spaces along Highgate Road, particularly the 31 Act protected 'Georgian squares' and Highgate Enclosures, are not only highly important assets in themselves but they are also a key element of the setting of some forty mostly Georgian listed buildings.  A relatively recent unfortunate but limited failure with respect to the ASF garage site apart, they have been jealously protected for the best part of two hundred years.  (A brief history is also attached below.)

The welcome intervention of English Heritage may give the Developers pause but it seems probable they will appeal.  The 'squares' are of more than local importance and we expect the Georgian Society and others will join us and the Grove End Green Action Group in defending the decision.  Watch this space.
