Camden lists Mansfield open space as an 'asset of community value'

The Conservation Area Advisory Committee is absolutely delighted Camden Council has accepted its nomination of the Mansfield bowling and tennis open space as an ‘asset of community value’.  The site met the criteria set out in the Act and Regulations 100%.  It is exactly the sort of site the Government had in mind when the Act was passed.

The listing, made under the provisions of the Localism Act, the first of its kind in Camden, takes a game changing and decisive step towards community led planning and away from speculator/planning application led decision-making.

The listing brings with it the potential for attracting large sums of charitable and public money to enable the whole community to, if necessary, buy, protect and secure the best possible outcomes for the open space.

The listing provides powerful confirmation that the site has a future without the need for a speculative housing development over the most important bits of open space land.  All we need now is for Camden to deliver the protection promised for this open space in the LDF[1].

Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts, who originally made the site available for open air sports and recreation for Dartmouth Park residents, would undoubtedly have approved.

We want to thank Cllr. Sally Gimson and the Mansfield Neighbours for the part they played in securing this ground-breaking decision.

We very much hope that the Dartmouth Park Neighbourhood Forum will soon be in a position to pick up this ball and run with it.

Given its history and social importance, we are also expecting the site to be ‘locally listed’ by the Council later in the year.
You can see a brief illustrated history of the site on the Mansfield pages of this website or you can download it using the link below.
Camden's notification letter and notes on the formal implications of the listing are attached.
